Pagan Self

by Timeless Hopeful   Feb 15, 2006

A run-away girl
Annabel is her name
Hedge-witch is who she is;
From Grecian decent
Running from a past she wishes
to forget.
She was raped as a child,
by the man who calls himself her step-father;
Casting spells and incantations to call in someone/anyone to protect her.
No one answered, her heart descended.
Her only solution was to run and only to
run…
Sitting on a park bench
Sobbing she said “I hate witch-craft.”
An aging woman
sat next to her, raised her head, looking
at the powder-blue sky.
“Have you ever seen the sky in such beauty?
That you realize that maybe this is a dream.”
Looking the woman strangely,
Annabel tear-stained, sniffling replied “No.”
Smiling she said “Well it must be only me.”
“Why are you crying my child?
Why sully that striking face” she asked amiably
Annabel took some time to wipe her face,
Then replied,
“I am crying because I am away from home
and I am sad that my spells and incantations haven’t worked for me.”
“Magic can only be used in the purest of intentions
whether it is hate, love, beauty…
And belief is quite essential as well
If you have doubt for even a second,
the spell is in-active.” Replying optimistic,
while admiring the powder- blue sky.
Annabel leered below found
Chiming pouches lined in each shoulder and hips
leering…
She sees a mahogany-oily skinned face
Wrinkles below her eyes and lips
showing her age, as though they were rings to a cut tree
Auburn-black hair tied in a bun
her beauty increasing with age
like expensive wine.
Annabel thought the woman was strange
She dressed like a high priestess
Yet her presence and demeanor contradicts it so
Annabel asked in a knife-yielding voice “Who are you…Lady”
The woman glanced at her for a minute
Looking at the sky she smirked saying “I am you.”
Stepping back slowly,
Like a mouse to a cat,
Annabel said slowly “Are you Crazy, or just daft.”
“I am you or at least what you will become,
just know you will be happy,
Find love and have sons.
I am here today to guide you” spoke Annabel’s future self,
her eyes entranced by the sky’s blue.
Annabel was still cynical about the woman’s claim,
but she followed her advice.
And in time
she was happy to know
that her future
will be perfect,
as the sky’s shades of blue.

I like how your poems usually tell a story and how they often are in different types of poetry, I always admire those who try to write to a formate because I always find that very difficult. You have some great writing here.
