By My Side

by Luke   Mar 5, 2006

We’d never talked much before
But it wasn’t hard to guess
Love pushed hard and you fell down
And he walked and you felt even less
After that you started to look away
Past the mistakes you made
And you didn’t feel well
So as the consequences started to burn
You felt the heat and it hurt like Hell
So you buried yourself under work and lies
Because it’s the only way you knew to hide
And you walked down to the river’s edge
By my side

A month passed
You had a life
I had mine
And I could only sigh
As life went by
I watched you live and die
I saw you learn the hard way
That in the city it’s rough
And as I watched
I think you finally succumbed
And as your responses numbed
I tried to help- but it was too late
With my advice and white lies
You looked away and shut your eyes
By my side

One year, six months later
You moved to Charlotte
I stayed in the city
And I heard about the tree that your car hit
And the fear was overwhelming
So I was on the next flight
Red eye in the middle of the night
The doctors did their jobs and I waited…
The next few hours were excruciating
And when I heard the flatline
I broke down and cried
They all did their best and you pulled through
By my side

It’s been three years
And my how we’ve grown
You got better
And moved yourself back home
A year passed and it seemed like fate
Because we got married
And you were three weeks late
Now we can smile
And in faith we can confide
As you walk into this California sunset
By my side
