Tale of the Teddy Bear

by StandStill   May 7, 2008

Cotton cloth teddy
sits on a bed
where little boy rests,
lays down his sweet head

Through many years,
teddy absorbs tired tears,
weary-hearted promises,
little teddy helps conquer the fears

And the little boy always had
a cheerful smile for it,
the teddy bear rejoiced
even if that was the only thanks it would get

All this 'til one day,
when the boy was near grown
traded in teddy bear for new toys,
a computer, a phone

Little boy didn't a stuffed bear
not when he had friends and other toys
"no, teddy bears are for girls!"
he would say, "not big boys!"

One day teddy bear
fell underneath the bed
and it wanted to cry,
but no tears would come from a cotton-stuffed head

Marble glass eyes ne'er closed
and hope, a lie, lived deep in its heart
hoping, hoping...someone would find it
and over again life could start

"What did I do wrong?"
little teddy bear would ask,
"I did my best-
best at that comforting task!"

Too bad teddy bears
are only menial lies
little boy got it right,
got it right the first time

Childhood wastes away
and the teddy bear's now alone
forgotten by little boys,
for little boy is now grown
