Stars of Ink

by Ria   Aug 17, 2008

When I was small I wrote a letter
There was no sender, no postal code
The only phrase it had embedded
Was it's receiver and it said God

I ask a favor
And if you can
Fetch me a star from overhead
Cause I'm too small to climb myself
And my old ladder is upset

It creaks and cries when I go up
It leaves no space to stretch my arm
I wish not to cause her harm
So I climb down and watch from far

So if you can, and live close by
Send me a star to guard my night
Send it back with this old letter
But just revise for me the sender

There is a stamp from me included,
So as not to put you in any bind
Do me this favor and my endeavor
will make this letter worth the time

I dropped by the post that morning
And let my yellowish letter go
I send a guardian wish with it
That you replied that month

The stars seemed less that night
and I was sure you had agreed
And maybe sent me even more
For being an honest kid

But the letter came home alone
It said no sender, no postal code
It had an ugly star on it
Drawn with a pen, dripping with ink

Ooof. the ending is so sad. wow. definately powerful. the building of hope, the youthful need, and that crushing at the end. and the ugliness of it contrasts so starkly with the beauty of the beginning. (i dont mean your writing btw) Great job!

I loved it. The ending really surprised me! That's pretty mean, I hope it isn't a true story
