Memories and Souvenirs

by Ray Smallshaw   Jun 24, 2009

Five objects stand on my television stand above my on suite toilet door,
Four pewter tankards and a silver plated teddy bear money box,
Of no use to anybody now as they are used, tarnished and old like me,
I look at them every night from my bed then relive some of the memories they stir,
The tankards are souvenirs of a submarine, ship and shore base I once served on,
Two of the tankards are from H.M.S. Turbulent, the other two from H.M.S. Devonshire and Kranji Wireless and Telegraphy Station Singapore,
In the middle of them stands my son Aaron's old christening money box that use to sit on his chest of drawers in his bedroom in Plymouth,
What tales these souvenirs could tell of my past forty years some good and some bad,
Like me they age daily yet are conscious of all that goes on around them,
Five objects of no use to anybody but me as they jolt my aging memory cells aiding me to recall the many good times I have had as well as the friends, work, play and my children I have been blessed with,
To me those five souvenirs are a part of my life's library and I often wonder where they will end up after I am gone,
As with them will go all those wonderful memories of my wonderful life .

Just another sad reality of this life.

My friend it is my hope and dream that, like in my poem gravity, our thought and memories will never fade away. They will exist for infinity. take your 5 objects and cherish them for they will be a key to the door of your living memories for ever.

great write, alot of feeling in there that can be appreciated. Good luck in your life and my it be full of wonderful memories.

Go and read a poem i wrote called

    An angels touch.

Its not a deep poem and you wondered if I could write a good one that's not deep. I wonder too. So let me know.

You want another deep one that will make you think.... Read
If the answer was a man.

hint... I don't mean "men are the answer" I literally mean if the "the answer" was a man.

nice to meet you through this site

    Ray,

This was a very touching write and I could relate to this very much. Like you, I have a house stashed with souvenirs that only are valuable to me, things my son made me, little reminders of the past and they fill me with love and gratitude every time I look at them.
What becomes of them after we dissapear is of no importance, because they are only valuable to us, they STAND for something without having significance by themselves.
The only thing that will remain of you after you leave is the love you bestowed upon your people, so be sure to devote your time to that and as little as possible to lifeless objects or goals that do not serve love:)

    *hugs*

    5/5 Ingrid
