A Heart Beats

by BEHROZE K PATEL   Sep 9, 2009

As I struggle with my very existence
I find emotions swirling all around me
Confronting me like an aggressive opponent
Wanting to eagerly vanquish me
"But oh my opponent I say to you
You aren't my enemy
You are but my bestest of friend
For your victory shall be my salvation
From all the drudgery that surrounds me
In this oh so darkest of hells."

Ah! A swish here a hiss there
Cuts and bruises appearing everywhere
Bleeding from the mouth and nose now
Stumbling on to my very knees
With bended head and broken soul
I await the final act
The final stab
A stab straight to my heart...
The heart that still somehow beats...
The heart I wish I never had...

I wait ...
And I wait...
Until curled up on the floor
I taste the bitter tears of existence
The survival of muscle and bones
I curse...
And I curse...
Until my voice turns coarse
But in the silence of my shattered soul
A heart beats... a sturdy unwavering beat...
