What Is Beauty?

by Lady Nik   Sep 16, 2009

Can you tell me what beauty is?

Some would say a feeling
Love. Hate. Envy.
Whatever the case
a feeling none the less.

I once received a gift
wrapped in shiny paper
with a lovely bow.
Beautiful... I thought
but I didn't feel it.

Can you always feel beauty?

I once saw a flower
the color of a blushed rose
such a beauty I thought to myself
and the smell...
one of the richest.

Is this flower not beautiful?
because I saw and not felt it.

I once helped my grandmother
bake a chocolate cake. Again the
word beauty came to mind.
The taste....I'm sure there are
no words to describe how
creamy and delicious this
said cake was but that's
not my point.

This cake was beautiful to me
even though I tasted it instead
of feeling it.

Seems that I have come to
the realization that
beauty may come wrapped
in shiny material or blushed with pink
with a rich scent and a creamy
taste.

All of these items may evoke a feeling.

I was excited for the present
happy with the flower
proud of the cake.

Is it possible for beauty to have multiple meanings?

It would seem so,
but what I perceive as beauty
may just be
a present, a flower
or a cake to you.

*For a contest at my school. The theme is Beauty is... I asked my mom and she said a feeling and here we are.*

^Lovely beginning. The first line, alone, catches interest, and a calming, almost soothing sense comes over me from the first stanza, I'm not sure if you were going for that, but it's what I ..felt. *smiles*

    I once received a gift
    wrapped in shiny paper
    with a lovely bow.
    Beautiful... I thought
    but I didn't feel it.

^Here, as well as the other stanza's where you 'think' I wonder if you could put quotes, because it seperates the thought and you can read it easier, for example, in my opinion:
    "I once received a gift
    wrapped in shiny paper
    with a lovely bow.
    'Beautiful...' I thought
    but I didn't feel it. "
Not sure if that makes any difference to you, but it helps me. lol.

^Again, I think you should put quotes around 'such a beauty'.
Hmm, I wonder if you could do this:
    "I once saw a flower
the color of a blushed rose
'such a beauty,' I thought to myself
    and that smell...
it was one of the richest."
    Whatcha think? (:

    Is this flower not beautiful?
because I saw and not felt it.

^This seems a bit off to me, almost like the second line should be a question.

bake a chocolate cake. Again the

    The taste....I'm sure there are
    no words to describe how

^I didn't like how you worded the last half of this. Possibly try "The taste... there are no words to describe how creamy and delicious this so-called cake was, but that isn't my point."
Somehow, that flows better to me, but eh, might just be me(:

^I absolutely adored this last part to it, so clever. Very well done, it made me smile, and was worded to perfection in my opinion. Honestly, this was great. Keep it up.

    Lovely write on Beauty...
beauty is indeed something you feel it...

    I once saw a flower
the color of a blushed rose
such a beauty I thought to myself
    and the smell...
    one of the richest.

^^ this indeed is beautiful because you feel the beauty too when you see it... and I felt the beauty when I read... just lovely imagery...

you have wonderfully described what beauty means to you :)

    keep writing :)

    Magnificent!
I have to say, you've got me thinking...

"Is it possible for beauty to have multiple meanings?"

I never thought of it that way... To make your readers think is something any good poet should do.

    Great write!

Excellent poem. Superbly written. Very intriguing and interesting, thought provoking, made me think more about the word and what it means. To me the poem just ended, didn't really conclude or finish it just stopped, perhaps a stanza on how beauty is perception, different for everyone (eye of the beholder stuff) you started a good ending but it felt too short, needs in my opinion just a bit more to really finish it.

"beauty is in the eye of the beholder" or in other words, each individuals opinion of what is beautiful varies. and it is good that you can find beauty in simple things. it makes life more enjoyable... or at least easier to enjoy.

nice job, i hope it does well in the contest ^_^
