Part Of His Flock

Part Of His Flock
By Mark Spencer

I stood upon my soapbox,
And I prayed for all to see.
I told the congregation,
What was special about me.

I practiced my piety,
And shared my veneration,
In the presence of my peers,
To gain their admiration.

Then one day I met a man,
Who claimed I was doing wrong.
He said: "Give no praise to God,
If you do it for the throng!"

"Do not share what is private,
Meant for you and God alone.
The true measure of your heart
Since before your birth, was known."

"Your deeds are not for bragging,
Since boasting makes them hollow.
Those who seek to lead the way,
Know not the road to follow."

"Let God guide you down that path,
Lest ye fall into a pit.
A child of God is humble,
Whilst the proud will not submit."

"Give honestly to the Lord,
For He knows what is untrue.
Don't call yourself a teacher,
While the Lord still teaches you."

"Those who seek to be the first,
In the end, will be the last.
'Tis they who will be wailing
When final judgment is passed."

He put His arm around me,
And I saw scars on His hands.
He said, "Share what you have learned,
But don't ignore God's commands."

And this is what He taught me:
He will always be my Rock.
He is the only shepherd,
And I'm just part of His flock.
