A Prayer for Shawn

I haven't known you
for years but my heart
wants you to soar.
You're suffering a great
deal and I want you
to hurt no more.

I can't be there to
hold you close and let
you feel the warmth of
my soul. Rub your shaggy
red hair from your ocean eyes.
Whisper in your ear
that you'll make it
through this.

I could care less
what happens to me...
I just want you to be okay.
I want you to graduate from
college and build amazing
golf courses. I want to watch
you surf rushing waves as
they meet the pale beaches.
I want you to play endless
games with your brothers and
help your mom with her work.
I want you to laugh
I want you to love
I need you to live.

I'd give the universe
back all of our time
together if only it would
take this sickness from you,
but it doesn't work that way.
So I'm just left with
this prayer.
