Resentment

by PinkyPrincess   Apr 4, 2011

Unresolved emotions,
lurk beneath the surface -
Confusion and dissatisfaction,
exacerbate the conflicts.

Meaningless words
increase the cold distance,
Loss of compassion
while carrying excess baggage.

Buried memories
crawl out at night
-so deep-
unforgettable
loneliness exceeds the limit.

Invalidation accumulates
destructive thoughts,
an open wound bleeding out
like a cureless disease.

Full of resentment,
devoid of happiness
lack of affection
...takes its toll on me.

Powerful! Resentment can definitely be a double-edged sword if dwelled on for too long. Your words were spot on, reached great depth with me. Brilliant work!

NIce job on the word choices and imagery. I can feel the pain and sadness in each word.

    Buried memories
    crawl out at night
    -so deep-
    unforgettable
    loneliness exceeds the limit

Usually night time is when we do most of our thinking. Things just run through your mind so many thoughts and ideas. This is also when past heartache comes to visit us.
    Good job!

This is amazing. I love the second last stanza. You had excellent wording in this as has been said above. It was a sad a raw piece but you seemed to just lay it all out. I love the title and the subject you wrote about was very fitting. Excellent write = )

Wonderful work, I can visualize the speaker moving through a revaluation of the relationship over time and finally drawing profound, but simple, conclusions. The progression is not so much building in a crescendo as exploring options and finding each subject to negative results. This poem is among the most perfect I have found in this site.

In the following, I use the second person to speak to your protagonist, since I know the voice in the poem is not necessarily the author.

    Unresolved emotions,
    lurk beneath the surface -
    Confusion and dissatisfaction,
    exacerbate the conflicts.

Emotional issues you have not been able (or not allowed?) to work through, never finished, magnify arguments

    Meaningless words
    increase the cold distance,
    Loss of compassion
    while carrying excess baggage.

You know the relationship is in trouble when sincerity is exchanged for banalities. When you're the only one working on the problem, you feel like you're carrying his baggage as well as your own.

    Buried memories
    crawl out at night
    -so deep-
    unforgettable
    loneliness exceeds the limit.

Maybe you can kid yourself while you're at work or just active, but when the lights go out, your mind fills up the void with the Problem you've brushed aside during the day.

    Invalidation accumulates
    destructive thoughts,
    an open wound bleeding out
    like a cureless disease.

When you are treated without emotional investment by the other, you have lost your sense of groundedness, you are not as real, you have become irrelevant. You feel your sense of purpose dissipating, along with the reason to keep going you had relied upon.

    Full of resentment,
    devoid of happiness
    lack of affection
    ...takes its toll on me.
    -^^^
Of course it does, like you have been tossed into the bin. No one deserves that treatment, not even from themself!
It would be interesting to read another poem about what this person's next step should be - the best step this person can take to get back self-reliance, self-respect and control of her own life.
