The Presence At The Door

by Lance Hardy   Oct 7, 2012

Knocking, knocking
I hear the rumbling and rapping
This somewhat rapturous tapping
Has interrupted pleasant napping
What figure haunts my presence
At this hour, evermore
The darkness ever comforting
Engulfs some person at my door
Hey now, off with you I say
With sure conviction, begone
I will not answer you now
Remove your figure at once
Though stirred, I am resilient
Stubborn and determined
Curiosity shall not overtake me
Then the rapping comes once more
A violent flooding wave
Anguish and real loathing
Hark! Listen to me vagrant
At this hour of so late
I will not grant your desire
To force me to yonder door
And make me open it blindly
To cold shudders and whatever more
Then the rapping comes once more
Damn it, you vagrant
Vile unseen demon
What right have you present
To bring torture to my door
I'll beat you, I'll maim you
Anything to get you away
You've interrupted me rudely
And my vengeance you'll not implore
Then the rapping comes once more
That's it, I've had it
Hold steady while I prepare
I'll grab my finest cane
To deliver retribution upon ye
May god have mercy on your soul
Once I cross this threshold
To reach your everlasting chore
Of this rapping upon my door
Then the rapping comes once more
With a mighty strength and fury
I slammed open my heavy door
What the hell do you want sir
To come rapping at my door
Interrupting night so pleasant
Breaking sleep so rejuvenating
Why come you so late this evening
Then the spirits fled me
As I gazed upon this presence
So tall and darkness encompassing
Never had I seen Death before
With toothy grin he smiled
And sleeved arm he pointed towards
Come now, there's no use in waiting
Death always comes a-rapping
To your door, evermore
