Ripples

Ripples
By Mark Spencer

When filled with vim and vigor true,
He seeks a dragon to subdue.
He pulls the stars down from the sky,
Like mythic gods on mountains high.

Filled with the recklessness of youth,
He fails to see the glaring truth.
All of the might found in his prime,
Will slowly fade away in time.

And when the need for statements loud,
Made with a tongue puffed-up and proud,
Have been replaced by mindful ways,
That's when he'll reach his seasoned days.

The wisdom gained from passing time,
Will shed its light upon his climb.
And finally he'll know the worth
Of youthful triumphs on the earth.

For every earthly thing must end,
Reduced to dust upon the wind.
Even the wind and earth must die,
As will the stars up in the sky.

The value of his mortal deeds,
The harvest of his planted seeds,
Will fade away as time moves on,
Until the memory is gone.

And as he looks through withered eyes,
On his imaginary prize,
The final piece falls into place,
The light of truth shines on his face.

For every ripple on the sea,
Affects the ocean's destiny.
But should that ripple disappear,
Will time recall that it was here?

If time continues marching on
Are ripples ever truly gone?
Will they not shape the cosmic sea,
That flows into infinity?

For ripples on eternal seas
Aren't bound to finite destinies.
An endless stream will have no end,
The realm that dies is just pretend.

His withered eyes begin to close,
The flesh embraced in soft repose.
Another ripple on the sea,
Expands into eternity.
