On boosting egos

by Saerelune   Sep 27, 2013

It's not yet winter and we're already hunting for wool,
if not cotton, and somehow, as sales seasons sneak by,
clothes layer as much in closets as they would upon skin,
when harsh winds bite like mad dogs on bones.

Still we flicker through sleeves like magazine pages,
expose a kaleidoscope of aztec and technicolour
as the stench of utterances swamps our already
faint breath of toothpaste, because time is scarce
in the morning, and our collection even scarcer,
with mountains of old-fashioned fabric exiled
in drawers, tempting nothing but hungry moths.

    Judges comment:

So many descriptive pieces in this poem overload the senses and overload my heart. Truly a beautifully crafted piece, each item placed seemingly well thought out and full of intent. I agree with the comments on this poem and they took the words out of my mouth.. the phrasing is particularly beautiful and interesting, and the language is absolutely superb

Was this from my challenge in FOP? I said to use wool and you diiiiid lol. I love this. I love that "it's not yet winter" you started out with --- I love the phrasing.

I wasn't sure the meaning of this poem really, but being it's in the life category I can only think of consumerism and materialism. It's changing weather so we must go out and search for the newest, latest, greatest... only for them to be in a heap on the floor (or in the closet)..

OR it could mean how we put a mask on ourselves -- we layer up in coldness in fear of being vulnerable, yet we stare at magazine pages and wish to be bare, vulnerable, fierce.

I love how your poetry can make me think in many ways, literally or metaphorically. Brilliant, m'dear!

Well I actually just bought some new clothes because it's almost winter and I barely had any long-sleeved shirts. I was sifting through my closet and thinking: jeez, I've got lots of clothes. I did also have to think about your challenge though. :') So my initial message would be what you said first. The second sounds like an interesting approach to reading my poem too, to be honest!
