Farewell my Friend

by Larry Chamberlin   Oct 17, 2013

The kitchen is empty
the corner you slept in
is cleaner than in years
not even the shed hair
remains behind to remind.

The park is empty
the paths we walked
has none of your smell
with no territory marked
for your known space.

The back yard is empty
no need to patrol it
before the mowers come
not even that is left
to mark your passage.

My empty heart cries
for lack of boon spirit
that too has passed away
eclipsed by the dark hole
from where you used to grin.

Pet poems always make me cry. They leave a great, big voidwhen they leave us, even when we get a new pet, we still miss them. Especially when they're with us for so long and leave us unexpectedly. =\

So sorry for your loss Larry... this was such a touching and beautiful poem. I know how hard it is to lose a dog, our's was about 18 years old and had been with my parents before my brother and I were even born. They truly do become a big part of our families and share a space in our hearts.... may he be remembered.

I really connected to this poem Larry, I thought it was really touching and the way you showed that it is not only the house that is now empty, but every place that you both went to together. I think it just shows how much we truly share with our friends, and how much memories we make with them.

You describe everything as empty, then you add in your heart and have that as empty too. I know this pain and can understand it well. It is truly the hardest part of having them.

I think it is very nice you wrote this poem, and you shared your memories with us, which in turn, shares a part of this dog with people who never knew him.

Thinking of you. And well done for a beautiful tribute that will capture the hearts of many on here.

I know you know how I felt when my Bonnie was taken...now it's time to reciprocate...nothing further I can say but..my thoughts are there...

My blessing was that I had such a long time with Dragon, rather than having him taken from me like Bonnie. Thank you, Hellon

It is accurate. I have felt that dark vacuum of space people leave behind.
