Long Road

by Jack Nightengale   Dec 12, 2013

Under the stars upon a mountains ledge,
He lays there looking up, thinking on the very edge.
The clouds clear as the moon showers the land in light,
The howling winds shake the man on this cold winter night.

The man stood and stared at the moon,
Wondering if he'd find his love someday soon.
He closed his eyes and listened to the wind,
Calm and cool as it came to its end.

The long road he's traveled, all that he's gained and lost,
The aches and pains, his sacrifices and what its cost.
Haunting memories of what's come to past,
Finally come to an end when he opens his eyes at long last.

He gazes over his shoulder to see a hundred men behind him,
Weapons drawn with red eyes looking grim.
He draws his sword, charging for the long road ahead,
Paving the road in blood as his memories now lay dead.

I liked this one a lot. For me, strong imagery. I found myself standing by this man thinking the same thing. Just the last stanza threw me off, just went in a different direction for a ending than what I was thinking. But still, a lovely read :) 5/5
