The Unicorn Princess

by cassie hughes   Mar 6, 2015

There once was a princess with skin oh so pale,
And gleaming brown hair almost down to her tail
that she flicked with abandon and combed out with glee.
How she posed and she pouted for selfies did she.

Now her hair, it was dark but in spirit was fair.
As her friends would all tell, she had dizzy to spare.
For her head rested high in the clouds up above,
And she dreamed of a rich handsome guy she could love.

Awaking one morning, she looked out to see
In the distance, a unicorn under a tree
And she stamped and she shouted aloud in her pique
How she must have the creature, so shiny and sleek.

Now the neighbours all knew this a problem would pose
as a unicorn never its love it bestows
upon any, unless they be kind, fair and true
But the people weren't certain their princess would do.

Although sweet and endearing most times she could be,
with a smile that would light up the night into day.
She tended to tantrum if things went awry
and she could turn to rage in the blink of an eye.

There was only one thing they could think of to try,
so they emptied the coffers, a wizard to buy.
They counted their pennies and sent out an ad,
for a masterful mage that would make them all glad.

But a fortnight went past without even a hint
of the man in a pointy hat they had all dreamt
would come rushing to help, their dilemma to fix.
What on earth could they do? They were all out of tricks.

Then just when the princess began to despair
and the villagers had begun tearing their hair,
A young man came forth with a smile and a wink
and said "I'll get her highness a beast in a blink."

He wouldn't say how and he wouldn't say when
but he took all their money and smiled, once again,
then he bowed and proceeded to saunter away
and they wondered just what they would get for their pay.

Two more weeks went by without even a word
and the princess was starting to get on their nerves.
She kept asking them over and over again
if her unicorn would be delivered, and when.

Then just as the villagers thought they'd been had
and their money had vanished, along with the lad.
A shout from the palace made everyone stare
As the princess came running, with nary a care,

for the glances and whispers the people bestowed
on her lack of decorum. The haste that she showed.
Then they gaped in amazement and silence ensued
As she stood in their midst and her garment they viewed.

She was dressed head to toe in an all-in-one suit
That folk had to agree made her look rather cute.
But no princess before had been thusly attired
There was simply no trace of the chic they required.

As she smiled and she twirled they did notice at last
That the back had a tail and some wings stitched on fast,
Then she pulled up the hood with a squeal of delight,
And the villagers stared at the singular sight.

For there at the front of the hood, plain to see
was a horn and it stuck out most singularly.
"I'm a unicorn!" Just in case none realised
did the princess call out, happiness undisguised.

Now it took a few moments for it to sink in,
Then the villagers cheered at the sight of her grin.
For although 'twas a beast in the flesh they had thought
That she wanted, they meant to have bought.

It seemed she was happy with what she had got.
And that was a cause to be glad was it not.
Then they watched as she pranced and she preened, what a sight!
Until back to the place she ran for the night.

So peace then descended upon them once more
And the villagers sighed with relief 'though now poor.
For their princess was sweetness and light yet again,
And for that they would think of their money well spent.

For my gorgeous niece Molly. Who does indeed have dizzy to spare!!

HAHA, This is brilliant Cassie - lovely change up. Done a few quite like this in style myself. Cheered me up no end and was really well written.
