Three Poems

by Mahal Ko Kuya Ko   May 18, 2015

4 AM and still awake,
having glances with midnight trains
and old journal entries,
stumbling upon a poem
about a widow
and a darkly sad song
that bothers me enough
to look at obituaries.

Japanese Camellias
fall from the sky again.
May evenings are catastrophic,
don't let up,
whispering a prose
about a man carrying a pot of cacti
which persuades me enough
to believe the city I've always been to
is a fly-over country.

She didn't believe the song
was sad and dark...
until the cacti wilted one May evening.
It was one of those catastrophic nights,
but it didn't whisper poetries...
No,
it
didn't.

I must get an umbrella now,
Camellias still fall from the sky...

and they, too,

don't let up.

WOWWWWWWWWWWW, Nominated without a second thought. I LOVED your ending here Dashiel. You have portrayed so much in this poem. The whole poem seems to be set around someone who is suffering from insomnia. 4 AM is a nice time for your thoughts to run wild. I love the detail to each and every scene you have used. To add metaphors to the imagery is unbelievable as well, in a good way of course. There also seems to be a lot of personal touch to the poem, so I cannot speak what you are going through, but it seems to be about a city and in the point of view of someone who is dealing with a great deal of pain inside of themselves. This is a little unique from the rest of your poems as well, Instead of using flowers for good and light, it seems like you used them as a fuel for darkness but that is just me. The ending is your best part I feel. 5/5
