These My Wings

by Once an Angel   Jun 7, 2015

You told me to reach,
so I grabbed for your hand,
only to find,
it was too far to go.
I suppose I expected it
to be too far to climb,
when I began this trek,
alone.
Solo.
Goodbye to you, then,
with all my love.
Now out of reach,
out of touch,
out of hope.
Goodbye.
What?
You cry?
No, Dear,
none of that.
It's past time to say
Goodbye.
I confess
I planned it this way -
to fade out of sight,
to disappear.
Silent.
Into the night.
Go, Love,
your future is bright.
Flee from me,
go back to the light.
What?
You're still here?
Love,
I'm sorry
I can't hold on much more.
The show's over and done,
And with it I'm spent.
Please,
go now,
while it seems
the battle's won.
I am armed with the courage
that alcohol brings,
but when it's gone,
with it will be my wings.
Then I will fall,
into the dark,
a lost
and broken
thing.
Free yourself,
before you see
the death
of these,
my wings.

What a perfectly written poem. I love the way it's set out, too - it works really well. Some lovely lines in this. Well done.

I loved the wording in this piece, the flow is a big positive in the poem itself and it works well because the lines of the poem are so short, a lot of people would be turned off by this but not me, it works well.

But the message of the poem seems to be saying goodbye to one person that we loved. BUT here it is not a typical poem, it seems here that instead of going through your eyes, you wrote the poem through the eyes of the person you are saying goodbye to. I thought that was a unique style and one I have not seen a lot in poetry.

anyways. It seems here you want them to move on from you and that it hurts to say goodbye to someone who was part of our lives. But they seem to be taking it hard then you are, you don't want them to cry or make a scene. I loved the ending the most here and that is what I nominated it for, the imagery though it might be fiction, the reality is, after we lose someone we don't want them to see our dark side and that is why you want them to say goobye, all in all this was an excellent write. 5/5
