Jaded Dreams

by cassie hughes   Sep 13, 2015

Lying in the grey of dawn she listens
to the chirping music drifting in through
window cracked against the heat.
Another day begins.
Drifting on a sea of make believe,
she tries to hold the waking day
away for just another stolen moment,
but there is no choice.
Softly she vacates the warmth and comfort
of her snug cocoon, reluctantly to start the
routine that will, on completion, have
her ready and prepared against the harsh
reality that is her life.
She dreams.
Asleep and in her waking
of a life that can not be.
She fears.
That soon her strength of will
may ebb and she must
fade away.
And on that dawn the birds will
rise and sing their chorus out
in joy and gladness but she
will no longer hear.

    Hello Cassie,

this reminds me off the short life of a butterfly, wanting to hatch and be free. However, this is more like a reversal of this. The cocoon is the safe area and the outdoors the grey dawn of reality. The dread of it is palpable.

    Well done,

    Take care,

    Michael

What a powerful and beautifully moving piece, Cassie. I really do feel a tinge of excitement every time I see a new poem of yours come up on my feed - and this is why.
