Death of a Poet

by cassie hughes   Jan 6, 2016

In fading shadow swiftly spent
is wrapped this heart against the world.
Where daggers can no longer pierce,
their vowels and consonants dispersed,
to plague another's paper dreams.

Held tight in inkstained ribbons worn
and thinned by press of silvered keys,
O'er time it's beat is crushed and slowed,
it's substance overwhelmed beyond
endurance by life's plots and schemes.

A growing stain of crimson hue
blots out the story of its's life.
Crisp letters drowned beneath the tide
of vitriolic interchange
sink, unremarked by silent screams.

In fading shadows swiftly spent
was wrapped this heart against the world.
Yet sharpened nibs did penetrate
to tattoo nightmare's 'pon its core
in mortal, multi-coloured streams.

Cassie - this is wonderful. The meter is absolutely flawless - I think each line has eight syllables - and so lends the poem an absolutely perfect flow. The imagery too, as usual, is outstanding and your use of language a pleasure to read. I love how you have rhymed the last word of each stanza. This really is an accomplished piece of writing and certainly one of the best pieces of poetry I have read on this site. I'm speechless.....
I am out of votes this week, but I will nominate this on Monday unless someone else does this week - this poem deserves the winners' page absolutely!
All the best, Cassie - I think this might be the best I've read from all your wonderful work so far.
