Ashes on Mars

by Larry Chamberlin   Jun 18, 2016

Some of you children must go to the stars
please take my ashes, they're ever so light
scatter that dust on Venus or Mars
waft them windward from an alien height

Mine the asteroids, seize comet water
take your babies along, raise them up there
escape from eternal earthly slaughter
red planet is the first step on the stair

I have heard God told man to propagate
this crossing must not be your final leap
'cause being trapped on earth would seal our fate
though your heart will ache for home do not weep

You will carry with you earth's varied seed
and soon you'll gather sufficient wisdom
so now it is on hope that you must feed
your path lies beyond the solar system

Cosmic journeys began with daring flights
taken by men whose shared vision was bright
now the celestial horizons are yours
always remember the galaxy lures

A perfect change, and it makes the last verse rightfully beautiful now! Thank you!

I thought it was beautiful, but the word "stuff" really ruined the last verse (for me, at least)!

Other than that, great job Larry!

I struggled with that. On the one hand the "right stuff" required it, but on the other, it sounded cheesy. Thanks.

Here is what ITABFY refers to:

"Cosmic journeys began with daring flights
that were taken by men whose stuff was right"

      now changed to:

"taken by men whose shared vision was bright"

Larry, this is so beautiful and delicately written. Imagery spot on, rhyming spot on and well my tears flowed having lost a child myself.

Well done Larry definitely glad this has been nominated!
