Paradox

by Alex Penuelas   Apr 1, 2017

I don't know why I'm posting this, but I know that it is cathartic at best.

On the one hand,
I genuinely believe that
Humanity is capable of
Doing immense good.

I genuinely belive in the
Selfless charitable acts
That our species is
Capable of doing.

I know that these acts
Of kindness can inevitably
Allow us to become
Much more productive
In the years to come.

I firmly believe that
Together, we can
Accomplish the greatest things,
Heal the greatest pains,
And achieve our
Greatest dreams.

But... There's this
Annoying cynic hiding in
My head.

The one that looks at
Everything around and
Recognizes that the world
Isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

It tries its hardest to convince me
That Humanity is capable of
Doing immensely horrible things.

That we were able to
Create the atomic bomb,
and literally placed the entire
Biosphere as hostage,
Over the meager quarrels between
Naked apes.

That we can in the same breath
Find a reason to kill
the very people that we
Should be holding in our arms.

That Humanity is prone to
Ruin the environment for
Its own personal gain,
To destroy the trees that
Give us oxygen,
In order to print money
to buy air tanks.

And that it is much easier to hate
Love than it is
To receive it.

We all love
to hate love,
even though deep down inside,
that’s the only thing we all yearn for.

It's...a paradox I know,
To have two voices,
One of love,
And one of watchful hate,
Trying to convince your soul
To lean one way or another.

I've had so many of these thoughts too!
I hope we can find a way.
I try to do my part...but always wonder if it's enough

Interesting point of view, but definitely true.
As humans we have a tendency to let our emotions and selfish wants get in the way, but we are capable of so much more good than we know.
It's amazing what even one person can do, and how many lives the hand of only one can touch.
    Great write.
