Vengeance Lives On

by Larry Chamberlin   Mar 26, 2019

See it in the obeisance of a gently nodded head
leaving the tent of a man in charge of destiny
on the path of bidding to claim that life for him
who took so much from his lord and protector.

Revenge for another even when there is no purpose
that drives the heart to madness enough to seek
the end of more than just a human existence
but even the potential of what may live after him.

Burn the fields to the ground leave nothing,
no seed-corn to plant for next year’s harvest
then deeply plow abundant salt in the stead
so no future generations will know sustenance.

The man who seeks just vengeance sits alone
while sending others out to wreak havoc
but secures the place deep in enemies’ heart
that is erased only in obliteration of his own being.
