Go Back Home!

by Larry Chamberlin   Aug 2, 2019

Go back home!

Where is that?
Is it where my heart lies?
Is it where I owe my duty?
Will I spend my life looking
for a home that does not exist?

I used to know once;
home was my parents’
but I left there for good
and then it burned
to the scorched earth.

I left my parents’ house
to make a home with my wife;
wheresoever we rented or built
was always home,
until, one day, neither of us
could longer walk
through the other’s door.

Second love, fresh welcome mat
new home well furnished
in appreciation and devotion;
kids and cats and dogs
line the nest in fur and fury.

But now the doubts start;
hurtful words do not belong
in any home
(makes it a house).
You begin to wonder:
Who will be first to start
looking for the exit?
