Black Roses

by Anne Moore   Nov 6, 2019

I sit
Happy laughing
Carelessly living
And you walk in
Throwing down
A bouquet of
Two dozen
Possibly three
Black roses
Tied together
With purple ribbon
And say
The most
dreaded words
I know

“You know
What this means”

And in a way I do
But at the same
time I don’t

Are you meaning
It’s over?
Or
Are you meaning
It just begun?

Black roses
Mean many things
And I am unsure
What this could mean
It could imply hatred, death, and despair, or
Signify rebirth or a farewell for good
Or perhaps it’s emphasizing your utmost devotion

Or perhaps not
We’ll never know
