An Alternative Christmas Tale

by Milly Hayward   Dec 17, 2019

A twinkle in the dead of night
caused light through my bedroom drape
a golden gem of brightest light
formed a captivating shape

I looked out onto starry sky
and there saw the Christmas light
shining splendidly on high
the purest form of white

Music sounded all around
the kind I'd never heard
I heard a rustle on the ground
then saw a gathered herd

All around an old oak tree
animals of every kind
bended each on just one knee
where the starlight brightly shined

I joined the throng to see what
it was that kept their gaze
and saw there in a tiny hut
a babe in a bed of maize

All around were tributes made
by animals of every size
and with joy they sat and prayed
those most innocent and wise

Who is the child I asked one
as up a twig he climbed
He is the son of God come
to save us from mankind
