Let Me Tell You

by schmetterling   Nov 16, 2020

Let me tell you
about a girl
who gave so much love
to others
that she left none
for herself.
At the end
of each day
she lies in bed
wishing for better.
She doesn't know
if she'll ever
truly be happy
with who she is.
The entirety
of her existence
she's been told
"not good enough."
And this
is why she wears herself thin
attempting to please
those around her.
This girl,
she tells others
to keep hope alive,
to love their reflections,
to make the most of every moment.
Meanwhile,
she picks herself apart,
she feels worthless,
and she isolates
when it all becomes overwhelming.
You see her smile,
but have you looked deeper?
Do you notice
the bags under her eyes
or the scars
that mark her legs?
She cracks jokes
without hesitation,
but do you realize
the moments
she goes silent?
Do you really take the time
to understand
that maybe this girl
is not as happy
as she may seem?
Let me tell you
about a girl
who never learned
to love herself,
a girl
who struggles daily
with the idea
that maybe
she'll never be worth it.
