What's The Rush?

by Walter   Dec 7, 2020

He started the race not knowing the end
But determined to win is what he intends
His foot on the line and ready to go
All the runners compared to him looked so slow

The tensions were high and then the big bang
The signal to run in the air it would hang
Adrenaline pumping as he takes the lead
Though everyone's trying only one will succeed

Looking over his shoulder as he follows the track
And delighted to see that they are all back
Now with just the one path ahead to observe
At the fastest speed he'd follow and swerve

Then a runner retiring on the first hill
He smiled and went on admiring his skill
One runner down that only leaves four
More chance to win as it evens the score

The miles went on then another would stop
Exhausted and on the ground he would drop
Suddenly his smile turned to a grin
As that runners misfortune was more chance to win

Finding more energy to run at full pelt
And ignoring all of his pain that was felt
One more runner would stop but he just declined
Leaving all his misery and failure behind

On top of the world and nearing his quest
Feeling and thinking that he is the best
Then his closest runner would suddenly pause
Choosing this spot without any cause

Realising that he's the last runner left
This win was all his and felt like a theft
Over the horizon he'd follow the sun
Not knowing the end was where he'd begun

His smile turned to tears now frail and old
No prize at the end, no huge pot of gold
While the others enjoyed and quenched all their thirst
As with the race of life...It doesn't pay to end first
