When Only Memories Return - Sonnet

by Walter   Jul 17, 2021

I just close my eyes when you are not here
And instantly see your beautiful face
This is short lived and you do not appear
When my eyes open you start to erase

Though our surroundings familiar to me
Now feeling barren and cold just to view
And this emptiness is all that they see
When now my abode is not filled with you

Everywhere I look with what's left behind
Where I still search for you in every room
But already know that I'll never find
And my memories are all that will loom

I still see your footprints that you last stepped
But each day under the carpet they're swept
