Backtrack

The sun will rise across this land
Then set over beach and sand
We marked a path with our prints
And sought to love ever since

For each of us a wish was made
My promise kept to never fade
When on my knee I would propose
And kiss your lips when I arose

Our hands were held forever tight
With rings that bond and unite
But when the sun again would rise
I only stare at distant skies

And on the sand your prints I'd track
Which led to the sea, but not back
When the tide is high then they'll fade
And no new prints are ever made

But I still walk here to the shore
Where waves caress on the floor
As if you try to lure my feet
For the only way that we would meet

When looking back upon the beach
I see you there just out of reach
I'm so confused...was I wrong?
But the current now is so strong

It's also now I hear you scream
When things are not what they seem
And the prints I'd follow to belong
Were only my prints all along
