The Black Knight

by cassie hughes   Aug 31, 2022

Banners snap in breeze wrought heavy with the scent of horse and sweat
Hooves rumble across grass worn thin and bare in one final glorious bout
The crowd cheers as tip of lance held true and firm meets unresisting head
Heart leaps as clattering jumble of metal and man fall gracelessly from horse to ground

No bright colour marks my triumph
No coat of arms show prized lineage

I am the black knight

Champion of truth not glory

Hidden in plain sight

Hero of a thousand stories

And villain of a thousand more
