Hurt people hurt people.

by Linda   Jan 11, 2023

I was a poisonous friend in my youth.
I lacked boundaries,
healthy attachment style,
projected my insecurities,
dared all of you to join in my danger and you did.

I did not regard our lives.

I spewed bitter, burning bile,
untruths,
half-truths,
skated accountability,

gave up on empathy.

I dared everyone to hurt as much as I,
because misery truly loves her company.

I hope you have found happiness
beyond the evils I carried.

I will not hurt you now.
I won’t even touch you.

I cannot express how sorry I am,
how ashamed.

Naivety is highly volatile.
Hindsight is 2023.

I'm so glad this has been nominated. It's an honest poem that many will relate to, or will do one day. As for the title, that's a quote in itself. Only when we acknowledge our own hurt can we respond to others. :)
