Compassion

by cassie hughes   Apr 1, 2024

Warm sunlight bathes the weary soul
who sits beside his worldly goods
and curls away from scathing eyes,
His stomach cramping, reaches out
to grasp discarded paper wrap
discovering to his dismay
remains of naught but mouldy crust
inedible, yet still takes pause
to wonder if he dares the risk,
Then out of nowhere angel comes
with hands outstretched in trust and there
within is held enticing scent
of fresh baked bread and tender meat,
of coffee hot enough to scald.
He dares to hope yet holds his breath
about to turn his head away
when pure and gentle voice declares
“For you my friend, no strings I swear”
With tear filled eyes he takes the gift
and vocal chords unused to speak
force husky thanks past drying lips.
A moments care, a moments thought
can make a difference in this world
to those whose lives have spiralled down
for reasons none but they may know.
Just bear in mind it could be you.
