The microwave clock read 11:48 by the time you were standing on my porch steps-
Brown curls illuminated in the glowing porch light,
You’d stepped through the threshold of my door with a smile.
The scent of you brushed my nose with the chilly air.
And the first thing out of my mouth was how great you smelled;
You thanked me with a chuckle then sank into the couch like it belonged to you too,
And I fought the urge to choose your lap over a cushion before fighting the dog for your attention.
But you don’t walk through the door anymore.
The microwave clock read 1:33 when I walked through the door after walking you to your car-
You’d given me a goodnight kiss when I went in for a hug,
We had plans for the next night but your friends bailed.
I got drunk the next weekend.
Bathroom selfies and drunken admissions-
You’d told me you were just glad I had a great time.
The clock on my friends microwave read 5:03 by the time I’d gotten to bed.
Then 9:53 on mine when you messaged me from the pavement.
Then 11:21 when you told me better days were coming.
And then the numbers blurred and I don’t know what time it is anymore but-
The microwave clock read 11:48 by the time you were standing on my porch steps,
And 1:33 when you drove off and got trapped on the pavement.
