The couch cried as hard as I did when you left.
My eyelids are heavy-
Red rimmed from contacts I should’ve replaced a while ago,
I’m exhausted but you still dance on the back of my closed eyelids.
And my body protests when I do anything right now-
Every muscle screaming from overuse after I’d lost track of time NOT thinking of you,
I went too hard at the gym so I chug chocolate milk like an instantaneous cure.
The tv hums low and I stare at your name on my screen;
Willing you to text me never helps but I do it anyways,
Sometimes you show up in my dreams and I get to tell you that I’m not angry.
And in a perfect world you don’t drown in your own guilt.
I get to watch you walk back through my door.
Nuzzle my face into your neck again.
Breathe in your cologne.
But you’re gone when I wake up;
Empty sheets on your side of the bed untouched,
Waiting for you to slide back in where you belong like if they’re patient enough maybe you will.
I still can’t bring myself to sleep in it.
The couch cried as hard as I did when you left-
It’s a routine now because every-time I wake up on it I lose you again.
