Battlefield Earth
By Mark Spencer

He took a long, reflective look at the darkness,
Pondering the risk he was about to take.
He thought about the material universe,
And the perilous journey he would soon make.

That universe looked like nothing more than a speck,
Nestled between realms of darkness and of light.
Earth was the center point between these two realms.
To journey there meant he'd be in for a fight.

The darkness was created by the fallen ones,
As a tool to prove the Creator was wrong.
Mankind was not worthy of his grace or his love,
They said; in the darkness is where they belong.

They created temptation, selfishness and greed,
Immorality was their crowning glory.
Bait to lure their prey into the stark emptiness,
Where he might find a sad end to his story.

He was determined to survive the coming fight,
Refusing to be a casualty of war.
He would prove that God was right in creating him,
As many of his brethren had done before.

He was told that all his knowledge would be suppressed.
He'd become a creature of Earth's reality.
He would have no memory of where he came from,
Nor would he recall his own immortality.

Finite would be the nature of his existence.
He would become that person, body and soul.
His choices would determine his eternal fate.
And overcoming it all would be his goal.

He chose the couple who would become his parents,
Hoping they could help him with the task assigned.
Determined to prove that he was not a mistake,
He was willing to risk body, soul and mind.

He felt drawn through a tunnel to a foreign place,
Feeling the process of his own mortal birth.
Pulled from the womb, he took in his first breath of air,
A painful first mouthful of battlefield Earth.

End.
