Friendship without Guilt

by Michael D Nalley   Oct 30, 2004

When a favor is done for a friend, they should not feel any guilt
For even if the favor is not returned, the friendship shouldn’t wilt
My cup is to savor. As my cup runs over, favors are to be spilt
I will let them spill where they will. Maybe a lasting friendship will be built

Does the hummingbird feel guilty, when it takes the nectar, to which it flew?
And say to the giver, how can I return the sweet favor some day to you?
Does it not give joy to the giver, when its wonderful beauty is in view?
Its wings gratefully hum in the innocence of doing what it has to do

It takes its nectar from a flower, which also finds joy in living
With no guilt from the pleasure it receives from the joy of giving
If by chance the hummingbird should pollinate a flowers seed
It could be like a friend, because a friend can always fill a need

In order to feel guilt it is said, someone has to offend
So why must we feel guilty? I cannot really comprehend,
For receiving something from one who is our friend,
Whose cup runs over, with a helping hand to lend.

Saint Francis said, it is in giving that we receive
What greater joy is there, that true blue friends, can achieve
May you always do for others, and let others do for you
May the gracious Lord always bless you, with a friend that is true.

Excellent! I've never read a poem like that on this site before--God's given you a gift, and (from what I can tell by your references to Him) your using it for Him. Wonderful!
