Empty Promises (or crackle, yellow, slide)

by Amanda Bee   Jun 10, 2005

She hears the crackle of her shattering bones
As her body slams against the hard wall
Pain surges through her head
As his knuckles crash into her skull

She slowly slides down the wall
Her head spinning and her vision blurred
And all she sees before she loses consciousness
Is the back of his yellow Polo shirt as he walks away

She should never have questioned him on his whereabouts
Or demanded to know who that woman was
She understands that she’s brought this on herself
As she comes to and picks herself up off the floor

She makes her way into the bathroom
And looks at her bloody, bruised face in the mirror
She hardly recognizes herself anymore, but that doesn’t matter
All that matters is tomorrow, when he'll promise never to hurt her again

* I wrote this while playing a game where the poem had to be 16 lines in length and contain the three words: crackle, yellow, and slide. *

Good illustration...though harsh in content. Hopefully it is only a story and not reality for there is no poetic justice in the end. Keep up the excellent work A.B.

Well written, a bit sorrowful for a game i'd think, but it got the job done.
