My Ball-and-Chain

by Renee   Jun 13, 2005

Living with this ball-and-chain
I'm just a burden to society
constantly being shamed
Why didn't I just keep hiding?

This ball-and-chain always follows me
I can't shove it back in the closet
It's causing me to drag my feet
my shoulders droop, my head is falling

"Lift your beautiful face, little girl"
A voice echoes in my head
"Follow me to the real world,
The truth you must be fed"

A hand caresses my chin
my eyes rise to face the truth.
my shoulders and neck start relaxing,
the ball-and-chain is cut loose.

The rhythm in this piece works well and it is refreshing to see a poem where the author realises that there is no need for forced rhyming.
