When I lie awake at night

When I lie awake at night
Half there
The other half drifting
Further into another world
I think about
All that’s happened
Throughout the day
Throughout the year
I think about all I’ve done
All I wanted
Desired
And did not get
Could not get
At the beginning
I saw the year
As a promising
New chance
To have fun
And do anything I didn’t get to do last year
I met great people
Worked hard in class
At times I gave up
Hanging out with friends
In order to study or work harder
I thought it would get me somewhere
Make me feel better about myself
My life
But now that I look back
I realize that
All the extra work
Yea maybe later it’ll pay off
But right now all I feel is regret
Regret
I feel like I have missed
So much
Like I could have had so much more
So much more fun
Excitement
I look back and see
A regular year
Nothing special
And I drift off to sleep
Dreaming of a better year to come.
