Racist Relationship

by Sierra Rae   Jul 17, 2005

*to my mom, it's a sonnet that I had to write for my english class that my black boyfriend happened to be in with me*

You're always dramatic, but never really kind;
you're the type who just assumes that you'll always be right.
While you change your opinion and change your mind,
one thing remains consisitent: the lack of light.

You don't understand, you don't think it's correct;
politically and socially "our relationship is unfit."
Well here's my opinion, and I hope it's direct:
race will never matter to me, change your mindset.

You can keep me at home, all locked up, put away,
and watch over me always, keep me alone everyday;
but one day I'll leave you, and can you really say
that you'll sleep well at night, just hoping I'll be okay?

Nothing you can do now will forever hold me down
and no rules you set for me will ever truly make you proud.
