A Tale of Two Yeast

by Sean Allen   Jul 21, 2005

It started out
as the best of times:
food was plentiful,
the sludge was merciful,
and there was plenty for all.
By the end of this tale,
however, all that will be left
of this paradise will be
a sorrowful story, amusing
only to those powers
who set the events in motion.

TWO YEAST converge on
a patch of delectable sugary
starchy goodness.
"I say, my dear yeast,"
cried yeast number one,
"is this not a land of plenty?"
"Indeed it is my friend, indeed."
replied the second yeast,
already speaking with his mouth full.

A quick note on yeast:

Yeast love sugar.
Yeast excrete alcohol.
Bad things (for yeast) happen
when you give yeast sugar.

Yeast love sugar so much
that they'll eat it
until they drown
in their own excrement.

A quick note on people:

(Some) people love alcohol.
Cells don't.
Sometimes bad things happen
when you give a person alcohol.

(Some) people love alcohol so much
that they drink it until
their cells drown to death
in poison.

Think about it.

Back to the story:

The two yeast,
and many yeast like them,
died after drowning
in their own excrement.

There is a lesson to be learned
concerning indulgence and greed
and pollution and vice
and I'm sure we can all
very well agree that
dying from excrement
is a crappy thing indeed.

I found it quite funny at the end but I've got an evil sense of humour I think there is a lesson to be learned overall!

This poem actually conveys a deeper message than what I thought at first. The dry humor and the sad truth about alcohol were put together very well, and I must say that this was definately a very unique poem. Nevertheless, I liked it a lot. I'm looking forward to reading & commenting on more of your poems. Take care,

    Awww!!! Don't die yeasts :(

Who suggested it? Anyways, funny, yes. Definitely a more dry type of humor though. And yes, it was sad. Though the comparison between yeasts and human greed can definetly place this poem in more then one section. W/e.

Heh I found it amusing with the yeast, but sad with the message. Very true though, and it was well-written, as always. Good job man.

    A quick note:

If this does not seem funny at all to you, then first of all I think you should consider the irony a bit more. Still not funny? Maybe not. I personally think it's more sad than funny, but someone suggested that it should go here, and I figure they'd know my poetry better than I would. Funny? Not? Go ahead and comment.
