Dear Daddy-Long but good

by Jesslyn   Aug 1, 2005

Dear Daddy,

You helped me when I was scared.
I only talked back if I dared.
I have to be real with you.
Because one day-he'll love me too.
He'll never take your spot.
I promise you'll never be forgot.
You can still kiss my skinned knees-
But I know about the birds and the bees.
You know all my memories too,
And you'll be there when they're not so new.
You're still my giant in the sky.
You still wipe my tears when I cry.
One day you'll give me up to another man.
Only let go if you can.

And I'll still be your little girl.
You can still protect me from the world.
If you see me making a mistake,
Even though it's more than you can take-
Let me make it on my own.
Just be there when I come home.

I know things for you were rough,
When I thought I knew enough.
I grew up and got defiant.
But on you I'm still reliant.
I'm not so little anymore.
But I still remember the times before.
You'd tuck me into bed,
& kiss my head.
To some you might be a zero-
But to me you're my hero.

Cause I'm still your little girl.
You still protect me from the world...
We can't deny-Can't forget-
That I'm not quite grown up yet.
I know you'll still be there at the end of the day.
I know you'll never push me away.
When I'm 19 and out on my own.
I promise to visit and call on the phone.
One day Daddy, I'll come home.

Because I'm still your little girl
and you're still the center of my world.
