A Reminder

by Cory Mastrandrea   Aug 30, 2005

School.
Fall semester has started again
along with the depression.
It isn't that I dislike school
or don't have fun there
cause I do, and I don't dislike education.
I enjoy school and like learning;
it helps to open the mind,
broadening ideas and backgrounds
All great stuff
But each letter in the mail addressed to me tells me why I'm there,
reminding me I need to get a job,
one that pays well,
and of the debt I plunge myself into
by flopping into a desk and dropping my book-filled bag to the floor beside me
I can feel it clawing into my back, sinking me deeper before even getting started.
School points to the future
knowing that the whole time they're readying me
to be a soldier of the work force.
readying me to go out and be a good worker at a job that I have to pay off other debts that have accumulated along with dust and cobwebs
on the floors and rafters
in the corners and crevices of life.
I love school and have fun there,
but it is still a reminder.

Wow I really like this poem and I totally agree, school is great but what its purpose is is scary, I can't wait to leave but I'm also afraid to leave, I like the use of repitition at the end, and think your style of writing is beautifully unique
