Words to Remember: Finite

by Cory Mastrandrea   May 31, 2006

Certain words should never be forgotten in any language. This particular word is no different. Often times people stress its opposite. They have a knack to strive to be eternal or infinite (maybe because in some way that is everybody's goal), but there would be no infinite, no eternal, without the finite.

Everything about the world we live in is finite. Infinite cannot describe anything in it, only thoughts and beliefs that exist outside the realm of earth, yet we seem to forget. We live as if everything is infinite, and thus, we ignore the the finite. We take, steal, horde, destroy, conquer, subject, expecting everything to be alright because th world is infinite in its resources, full of plenty. Somewhere along the line plenty runs out. Plenty is a far cry from infinite. Plenty is still a finite amount. People try so hard to achieve the infinite, yet man can't even comprehend infinite, only finite. Everything physical can have a number put on it.

By trying to live in the infinite, man forgets about the finite, decimating whatever is in his way. Man will never stop trying to live in the infinite. It is his calling; his blood yearns for it. Man must learn how to live finitely in the infinite.
