The Butterfly Hides Her Colours

by Jaime   Oct 18, 2005

Hidden beneath the velvet black
Of the butterfly\'s silky wings
Lies a giant heart and pretty colours
And hundreds of other nice things

To understand the total depth
To many, would be a surprise
She\'s carefully covered the colours
To be seen by no other eyes

Choking, deep in her coccoon
Never coming out for air
Even when she knows for sure
That nobody else is there

The butterfly hides her colours
She is scared of the unknown
No way to guess the consequences
When everything inside is shown

I would love to know what the deeper meaning of the poem is, if there is one. My assumption is based on the fact that it is in the "life and society" section, as opposed to the "nature" section, as it would be if it were only about butterflies...
Or I could be completely mistaken.

    Either way, a nice poem.

That is really beautiful. I thought this poem was well expressed and well written. It has a pleasing rhyme schema and good flow.

I really liked the symbolism you chose with this poem to describe the fear of taking risks and revealing ourselves.
