Two girls

by Cleo   Feb 12, 2006

As the sunlight trickles in she sighs and moans
Rising, pushing back the soft white sheets
Over hastening to the velvet curtains-wrenching them open
She sighs and moans
Rain again
Sliding on her pretty silk gown
And delicate slippers
She strolls down the grand staircase
The kitchen bursting with colour and aroma
Breakfast frying
She sighs and moans
She will not eat it
Too unhealthy, too much
She settles for organic yoghurt and an apple
The fried breakfast goes to waste
A whole new dull day
She sighs and moans

At the same time
A girl kisses her little brother and she smiles
Black eyes are deep hollows in his fevered head
Darkness creeping in
She tucked him under their one blanket
Tattered and worn
She would do without tonight
Shivering she pulled over the dank mattress
She smiles and lowers herself onto its little relief
Arranging her pinafore around her aching body
She settles her hands on her stomach
Swollen with hunger or child
Slowly she wills herself to sleep
Dreaming of a life of warmth
Water
Food
A place where her brother could be well
Where she did not need to sell herself
She smiles
