Numbers...

by Ruthie   Mar 4, 2006

A monotone hum in my ear
the numbers start to swirl
concentration the key word
that avoids me like the plague

Day after day it's always the same
like a gentle lullaby cooing to me
a faint smile graces my lips
my head gradually nodding to sleep

My dream too vivid to remember
my sleep too deep to fall from
the numbers on the page
get dimmer and dimmer still

now they're only a sweet memory
of hard and pointless work
lost in a world of pink and white
of stars and curls and swirls

the humming stops the giggling starts
my sleep rudely interrupted
by my teaching glaring at me
and my total lack of numbers
