Charm wasn't enough

I sit here in this black tire swing
On the willow tree in Grans lawn
Down the street I see the moving vans
The tire stopped at what I stumbled upon

Squinting so I could get a look
The sun so bright; in my eyes
I start walking down the road
My excitment beginning to multiply

I put one foot in front of the other
Tip-toed as if I was in ballet
Perhaps I should pull up my peasant skirt
And give my hips a little sway

An exquisite man in a black suit
Included a special blue tie
This guy surely was a looker
For he quickly caught my eye

My white button up a little dirty
I was out picking weeds from grannys flowers
This man was so hypnotizing
I just couldn't turn back to take a hot shower

A limosine pulled up next to the man
As the chauffer opened his door
My gaze lingered a little longer
Searching for the possibility of more

They drove off down the road
My feet were burning from the blacktop
What a rich boy see in this country girl?
Can't even afford one pair of flip-flops

Hanging my head, I spun around
Went back to pulling weeds
This was how my life is destined
A poor rich girl, planting seeds

Three hours later, my neck now burnt
I felt someone tap my back
"Excuse me miss I am new to this street
I could really use some help with that"

Lousiana dusk settling down
As I look at this wealthy guy
I silently gasped to myself
My heart raced and mouth went dry

"Well sir you can go down to the corner store
They have flowers at half price
I'd surely be glad to help you plant them
Unless all you needed was a little advice"

"Thank you kindly for your words;
I surely do appreciate you
Offering your planting help
To a strange man who has no clue"

"Sir, I have never been this open before
But I'd like to offer you some afternoon tea
For I have never experienced this feeling before
No man has ever came for help to me"

I helped him with his flower garden
As we went out for a late gumbo dinner
I felt as though this could really last
Except he would be a rich sinner

The summer went by so very fast
I got some change, he got a lot more
Moved on to New York City
This neighborhood was to poor

He failed to keep in touch with me
Red hair and unpainted nails was not his type
So I'll continue house and yard work for Granny
As he smokes out of his $100 dollar pipe

A hard breakup that August night,
We simply weren't meant to be
I'll never forget that lovely summer
When I dipped my toes in rich mystery.
