One Step at a Time

by William Sirett   May 6, 2006

One step at a time, I'm sure you'll be fine.
Just be careful, we don't want you to cry.
We'll support you always, on this step,
and on many others, that you'll create.

I'll want to carry you for the first little while.
To be sure you're safe, no bruises or scars.
And then we'll let you go out on your own,
to discover these bruises, all on your own.

One step at a time, now don't you worry.
I'll be here if you need me, so please just hurry.
Life is so short, when it comes down to it,
so step out on your own, I'm sure you can do it.

This can be read in so many ways, it's brilliant. Don't we all wish we had someone to support us like this? Or, don't we all have someone we need to be cautious with? Life is a dangerous but wonderful thing, and taking small steps is no guarentee you won't get hurt, but at least you learn a little from it first. A short and effective poem (which is usually the best kind). 5!
